The Practical Dashcam Buying Guide (2026)

A dashcam is the single best tool for documenting dangerous driving. It never blinks, it never forgets, and it captures the thirty seconds before an incident โ€” which is usually the part that matters. But the market is full of spec-sheet noise. Here is what actually matters.

Resolution: 1440p is the sweet spot

The whole point of violation footage is a readable license plate. At 1080p, plates are readable at close range in daylight. 1440p ("2K") adds meaningful plate-reading distance for a small price premium. 4K sounds better but doubles storage consumption and often uses the same sensor with upscaling โ€” pay for a better sensor, not a bigger number.

Night performance beats megapixels

Most serious violations happen in low light. Look for cameras with a Sony STARVIS sensor (or equivalent back-illuminated sensor) and check real night footage on review channels before buying. A great 1080p sensor at night beats a cheap 4K sensor every time.

GPS stamping is non-negotiable

Footage with embedded GPS coordinates and speed is dramatically more useful โ€” for insurance claims, for police reports, and for platforms like CarNarc where location is what turns a clip into data. Most mid-range cameras include GPS; if it is an optional module, buy the module.

Loop recording and storage

Dashcams overwrite the oldest footage continuously. A 128GB card holds roughly 10โ€“15 hours of 1440p loop; incident clips (triggered by the g-sensor) are locked automatically. Buy a "high endurance" microSD card โ€” standard cards die in months under constant rewriting.

Parking mode, front-and-rear, and hardwiring

Parking mode catches hit-and-runs while you are away but requires hardwiring to the fuse box or a battery pack. Rear cameras double coverage for tailgaters and rear-end events. Neither is essential on day one โ€” a solid front camera with GPS covers most of what you will ever submit.

Bottom line: a mid-range 1440p camera with a good night sensor, GPS, and a high-endurance card covers 95% of real-world use. Mount it, set the clock, and forget it until the day you need it.
